Commack FD-Fatal fire at Casa Luis on Jericho Tpke

October 1, 2017 0029 Hours. 1033 West Jericho Tpke.

Vehicle crashes into the building, igniting escaping gas from a severed gas line. The victim dies in the wreckage. Kings Park and Smithtown to the scene. East Northport to cover. Commack Ambulance to the scene. Incident occurs at 0029 and is transmitted as a 13/25 at 0039.

A 2004 Nissan Quest was traveling eastbound on Jericho Turnpike at a high rate of speend when it left the roadway, crashing through a tree and a free-standing sign, a concrete retaining wall, and then overturned into the structure and another parked vehicle. When the vehicle hit the structure, it displaced the natural gas meter and ruptured the natural gas lines, resulting in a fire. The vehicle was fully involved, and the structure sustained significant fire and structural damage.

Commack Fire Department operated on scene with assistance from the Kings Park, Smithtown and Hauppauge Fire Departments.

The operator of the vehicle was found deceased within the vehicle. Suffolk County Police Department 4th squad detectives and crime scene unit completed an accident investigation. Photo from Newsday-Ted Phillips.
