Mankuski Park is dedicated and opens in 1974

October 5, 1974 From 11-1-74 Edition of the Smithtown News. Approximately 300 people attended and enjoyed the dedication ceremonies for Smithtown’ new Edward J. Mankuski Firematic Training Center. Fair skies and spring like temperatures complemented the dedication program which included the presence of the Mankuski family and impressive demonstrations by the Townships Fire Departments. The center is a culmination of years of effort by the Town and the Smithtown Township Fire Advisory Board, which was dedicated to the memory of Mankuski, Chief of the Kings Park Fire Department for 3 terms, who died when his Chiefs car crashed last February. Among those attending the ceremonies werre State Senator Bernard Smith, Assemblyman Robert Wertz, Suffolk County Executive John V. N. Klein, County Legislators Clifford Crafts and Angela Christensen and Village of Nissequogue Mayor Haig Chekenian. The program included demonstrations by the St. James Wildcats Drill Team, a rescue company hurst tool demonstration by the Nesconset Fire Department, an ambulance demonstration by the Kings Park Fire Department, a snorkel demonstration by the Hauppauge Fire Department, an aerial ladder demonstration by the Smithtown Fire Department, a car fire demonstration by the Commack Fire Department and live fire demonstration by the Nissequogue Fire Department. Prior to the centers existience, township departments had to travel to Yaphank. The training centers dedication coincided with Fire Prevention Week. Article in Smithtown News 10-10-1977
