Commack Ambulance wins right to use Harned Road Garage

October 5, 1967.

Special counsel Bernard Sachar ruled that property on Harned Road in Commack may be used for a garage to house ambulances. Mr. Sachar’s decision removed the final obstacle confronting the ambulance corp in their attempt to construct a garage on the one acre site. On August 29th, a petition was submitted to the Smithtown Town Board revealing that approximately 15 Harned Road families were opposed to the Corp’s plan to acquire property on the west side of the road for the garage.

Officials of the ambulance service said at that time that the intent was to rent the property, owned by the Long Island State Park Commission, to build a two-bay garage and a small office. The LISPC had agreed to lease the space to CVAC for $100.00 per year. Homeowners, objected to the garage in a residential area. They asked the Town if it would violate the zoning ordinance, and Sachar was assigined the task of making that determination. On October 3, 1967, Smithtown Town Supervisor John V.N. Klein said that Mr. Sachar ruled that the garage would not in fact be a violation since the LISPC could construct such a building by law, so therefore a leasee could do the same.

CVAC was formed in February of 1967 and has aquired 2 ambulances-including a 1967 Cadillac, purchased recently for $15,000.00. The Commack Fire Department does not provide ambulance service.
Until the garage is constructed, the corps will continue to store the ambulances behind Christ The King Church on Indian Head Road.

At the time of this endeavor, CVAC was doing approximately 15 runs a week. (information from Smithtown News 10-5-1967).
