Smithtown FD-Fire at the vacant CHOWS hospital

October 21, 2004. Fire reported at 1730 hours. Units arrived to find smoke pushing out of the other ambulatory center. Crews forced entry and after a search found the fire in the lobby. 2 lines were stretched and the fire was extinguished. Crews could not park anywhere near the building so homeliness had to be stretched hundreds of feet. There were large trenches cut into the upper floors of the building that had any of the firefighters fallen into they would have landed on the floor below and been seriously injured. There was also an open cesspool and other hazards on this property. One firefighter was injured and transported. Hauppauge FD assisted at the scene and Kings Park FD sent an engine to cover. Tim Crafts was OIC and Chief of Department.
The last of the buildings on this property were removed in the summer of 2017 to make way for a housing complex, which is now Country Pointe of Smithtown.
