October 23, 2002. Sturm joined the department at 16 years old. he served as Captain of Engine 1 and later as Captain of Engine 2. In 1935, he became an active member of fire police. Sturm was chairman and treasurer of the fund drive committee and was elected Sgt at Arms in 1994. Sturm was also Vice President of the Benevolent Association. Sturm was a lifelong resident of Smithtown and was married for 50 years to his wife Ethel. The funeral was held at Hawkins Funeral Home on Manor Road.
