Kings Park FD-House fire on the Kings Park Road

November 3, 1926.

Kings Park. A large frame home on the Kings Park Road and occupied by Charles Melowsky was the scene of an exciting time yesterday afternoon and as the result of a fire in the building, the mother of a two-day old baby had to be carried out and taken to the home of a friend. One of the members of the Kings Park Fire Department, Dudley McDonald, was rushed to the Kings Park State Hospital with one eye seriously injured as the result of being accidently struck with a hose nozzle carrying a heavy water pressure.
Deputy Sheriff Amza Biggs of Huntington was driving along the road when he noticed smoke coming from the upper part of the building. He stopped his machine and ran back just as the flames burst out. Another passing motorist put one foot on the pedal and drove to Kings Park to give the alarm.
The new combination pumper of the Kings Park Fire Department responded in record time and was soon at the scene where the crew dropped their suction hose in a cistern on the property. In the meantime Deputy Sheriff Biggs assisted by Melowsky carried Mrs. Melowsky from her sick bed, placed her in a motorcar and took her to the home of a friend. The offier and some hired help on the farm then turned their attention to removing furniture until the fire became too hot and the smoke was so thick that they were driven back.
The firemen soon had a stream of water on the blaze, but the pressure was so great that the nozzle swung around and struck McDonald in the eye. Some of his companions took him in their machine to the Kings Park State Hospital where physicians despairing of saving the eye immediately ordered his removal to the Brooklyn Eye and Ear Hospital.
The loss was a heavy one to Melowsky, who had the cellar of the house filled with his potato crop. The entire upper portion of the house was gutted.
