Smithtown FD-Ex Captain Stewart Ludder passes

November 14, 1978. Stewart Ludder, an active member of the Smithtown Fire Department, who received his 55-year service award this year, passed away suddenly on 11-16-1978. Stew joined the Smithtown Fire Department in February of 1923. At the time of his passing, he was a member of Engine Company 3. Ludder was born on January 17th, 1907. According to his brother Stafford Ludder, he suffered terrific chest pains before his death. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital. Ludder was the Fire Department Treasurer for 40 years, giving up the post in 1970. Ludder, together with his two brothers Edward and Stafford, have a combined total of over 155 years of active service with the Smithtown Fire Department. Ludder was Company 2nd Lieutenant in 1932, first Lieutenant from 1933-36, and Captain from 1945-47. Ludder was a florist in the family business and also worked at the Bank of Smithtown.
