Smithtown-TTY Machine installed at 4-2-0

November 15, 1984. The machine permits residents that are hearing and speech impaired to communicate directly with fire dispatchers. Text telephone devices (TTYs or TDDs) areĀ used by people with hearing or speech disabilities to send and receive text messages over telephone networks. In the past, wireline telephone and analog cellular networks generally were compatible with TTYs, but digital wireless networks were not.
