Smithtown FD-House fire on Trent Lane

November 25, 2015. 16 Trent Lane.

Arson detectives are investigating the cause of an early morning house fire that killed a family dog in a Smithtown home on Wednesday.

Some 50 firefighters responded to a fully-involved blaze at the two-story structure on Trent Lane about 3:30 a.m.

“Fire was coming out of all four sides of the building,” said Smithtown Fire Department Chief Timothy Murphy.

The family of four evacuated the home after they were alerted by a smoke alarm. The homeowners were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for observation.

The cause did not immediately appear to be criminal. An outdoor fire pit or chimney is among the possible causes, Murphy said.

Several area fire department provided mutual aid, including Kings Parks, Nesconset, Hauppauge and St. James.

“It’s a shame when you are expecting a holiday weekend and you don’t want to see people in tears outside their home,” Murphy said.
