November 27, 1975. Early Thanksgiving morning fire destroys part of the garden apartment complex at 355 Route 111 in Smithtown. Fire started in the ground floor apartment of Andrew McVay. Four elderly residents were reportedly trapped and were rescued by firefighters. 3 police officers were injured while evacuating residents. Smithtown Firefighters Brad Wilson and Butch McBurney were awarded Firefighter of the year by Suffolk County for the rescues. Smithtown FD received the NY Daily News Vamp Award for this fire.
