Smithtown FD-Fatal house fire on Townline Road

December 1, 2009. 1344 hours. While operating at a car vs pole in the westernmost part of their district, the Smithtown Fire Department was activated for a structure fire to the rear of Branchinellis restaurant on Townline Road. Dispatchers took multiple calls and almost immediately, the Hauppauge Fire District Fire Marshal was on scene reporting a heavy fire condition within a 1.5 story wood frame multiple dwelling located at 675 Townline Road.

3-8-40 and an NYPD detective (and former member of the Hauppauge Fire Department) forcibly entered the eastern portion of the building and conducted a search. The fire apartment on the west side was untenable without gear and they were unable to enter.  Smithtown and Hauppauge FD units quickly extinguished the fire. During the course of the primary search, 1st Assistant Chief John Hansen and paid medic Sal Guarnari located a female victim in her 20’s. She was obviously deceased and there was no threat of the fire consuming the body so she was left in place. Once the fire was extinguished, the scene was cleared of all but Smithtown Fire Marshals, Suffolk Police Arson and homicide detectives and units from the county crime lab. The cause of the fire or nature of the victims injuries will be released at a later date.  Hauppauge Fire Department assisted Smithtown at the scene while Kings Park and Saint James Fire Departments covered the remainder of the district.
