Nesconset-Fatal stabbing on Alexander Ave

December 1, 2007.

An elderly woman killed in Nesconset during the weekend was officially identified by police yesterday as Martha Watson, a grandmother of seven who was stabbed to death in the same home she raised her children in, police and a relative said.

Watson, 70, had worked for several years at a Smith Haven Mall clothing store before retiring. She lived in the Alexander Avenue home with her grandson, Matthew Watson, 20, police and a family member said.

Matthew Watson called police Saturday afternoon and said he had been stabbed. When police arrived at the scene his grandmother was already dead. Matthew Watson was taken to an area hospital and is in stable condition.

“She was a sweet little old lady,” said Helen Haeffner, of Rocky Point, whose sister is Martha Watson’s daughter-in-law. Haeffner said the family had received little information from police and was baffled as to who would want to hurt her.

Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick, commanding officer of the Homicide Squad, declined to release details in the case. “The house apparently has issues involving drugs,” he said.

Records show Matthew Watson was arrested in March for criminal possession of a controlled substance – heroin – and possession of a hypodermic instrument. The latter charge was dismissed and he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct in the seventh degree.
