Hauppauge FD-Firefighter injured responding to house fire on Terry Road at Parkway Gardens

December 1, 1949 Harvard Nichols was traveling east on Motor Parkway when the jeep he was driving went out of control, leaving the roadway and traveling down an embankment. Nichols was able to free himself from the wreckage and walk to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ravera. Dr. Kuhlke of Smithtown was summoned and responded to treat his injuries. Nichols suffered a concussion, fractured ribs, facial injuries, finger lacerations and a gash to his knee.

The fire he was responding to was reported in the afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Stoddard. At the time of the fire, nine members of the family were home. The fire started in a defective chimney and then extended into the house destroying most of it. Hauppauge was assisted by Smithtown and Nesconset FDs. The fire was discovered when Mr and Mrs. John Croteau of Bayshore were driving by and noticed smoke coming from the front windows. All of the occupants evacuated safely.12-8-1949 Smithtown News
