St. James FD-Past President John R. Shelton passes

December 14, 1967. John R. Shelton Sr., 55, a resident of St. James for 25 years died today at Smithtown General Hospital after a long illness. Shelton was a past President of the SJFD, founder and chairman of the SJFD ambulance and an Ex-Chief. Mr. Shelton was a life member of the NYSVFA, past president of the Smithown Chiefs Council and he was a deputy fire coordinator. Obituary also says that he “supervised the construction and maintenance of alarms in the Smithtown area”. Mr. Shelton was the owner of St. James Electrical Company. Prior to that, he was a master electrician at the Republic Aviation Division of Fairchild Hiller Inc for 15 years. (Smithtown News 12-21-1967.)
