St. James-Car vs Train

December 15, 1948. Lake Avenue Railroad crossing. Mrs. Harold Cahill and her son James were seriously injured when the vehicle in which they were driving was struck by a westbound LIRR train at 2145 hours. The car was carried over 100 feet and practically demolished. Smithtown Fire Department transported the victims to Southside Hospital. Mrs. Cahill was removed from the car immediately and taken into the station. Fifteen year old James was trapped in the wreckage and a local garage owner was summoned to torch off the door so he could be removed. St. James FD responds to the scene with flood lights.
