St. James FD-House fire on Vanderbilt Avenue

December 18, 2017. The Saint James and Nesconset Fire Departments were dispatched on a 911 call reporting a house on fire on Vanderbilt Avenue in the Saint James Fire District. Units arrived to find heavy fire venting out of the ground level garage of a two story wood frame colonial. All of the occupants as well as their 15 pets had safely evacuated prior to the arrival of the FD. Chief of Department Edward Springer Jr had his first due engine make a quick hit on the fire with their deck gun, while crews tied into the fire hydrant. This was very effective and kept the fire at bay as hand lines were stretched. The fire was knocked down within 25 minutes but crews remained on scene for approximately an hour overhauling and venting the building. Nissequogue FD sent an engine with a crew, Stony Brook sent their ladder with a RIT, Smithtown sent their ladder with a crew, Ronkonkoma sent an ambulance and Centereach sent units to cover. The Smithtown Fire Marshals Office and Suffolk Arson are handling the investigation into the cause of the fire.
