St. James FD-Fire destroys the St. James Hotel

December 31, 1962.

The hotel was located on Lake Avenue across from the old Blue Jay Market. It was also called Moore’s Hotel.
Firefigher’s were hampered by heavy winds and sub freezing temperatures. The building was 58 years old at the time of this fire (built in 1904). Photo by “Frye” in Smithtown News on 1/3/1963. Building was 3 story wood frame with a peaked roof. Was built in 1904 by Michael Edward Moore. Was originally built as a hotel, parts of the building were occupied as a meat market and an electrical shop. Just prior to this fire, the building had been renovated by the new owners. 1-3-63 Smithtown News.
