Commack FD-Building fire on Jericho Turnpike

January 4, 2008 0330 hours. Commack Fire Department responds to a structure fire at 6240 Jericho Turnpike in the Huntington side of their district. East Northport, Kings Park, Dix Hills, Greenlawn, Hauppauge, Smithtown, Huntington Manor, Deer Park, CVAC, Huntington Community, Centerport FD EMS, BLA all send units to assist the scene. Firefighters encountered sub-freezing temps, frozen hydrants and severe icing conditions. to battle the blaze with 20 pieces of apparatus. The fire was brought under control within 90 minutes but crews remained on scene until approximately 1330 hours, extinguishing hot spots and dealing with a building collapse. A payloader was brought in to knock down the building. Sal Formica was Chief of Department and the OIC. Five Commack FFs were transported to St. Catherines hospital-three were injured after slipping on the ice and two were hit by falling debris. Suffolk Arson is investigating.
