Hauppauge FD-Outside electrical fire

On September 4th 2008 at 1548 hrs the Hauppauge Fire Department was dispatched to a reported transformer fire on Hills Park Lane in the Smithtown Pines area of the Fire District. Engines 3-8-14,3-8-13 and Fire Police operated at this incident under the Command of Chief of Department Thomas Kriklava.

The fire which was first believed to be a small underground electrical transformer(later determined to be a secondary splice box.) burned intensely with intermittent electrical arcing. A small hose line was stretched to protect exposures and LIPA notified. After a little less then one hour the utility company arrived and the Chief was satisfied it was safe enough to extinguish the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher.

The homeowner whose residence this incident occurred in front of suffered minor property damage to a small decorative light post and to a shrub. At least four residences were without power and firefighters on their arrival had in conjunction with the residence isolated their electrical systems at the individual home circuit breaker panels  and checked the residence’s for possible carbon monoxide contamination. All Hauppauge Fire apparatus was back in service as of 1729 hrs.
