November 13, 1965. A fuel oil delivery truck and a passenger vehicle collide on Veterans Highway near Old Willets Path. The impact of the collision caused the tanker to overturn and the leaking kerosene to ignite. The occupant of the vehicle, Karen Silver age 19 of 32 Parnell Drive, was killed. Hauppauge and Smithtown firefighters worked for over two hours to extinguish the fire, which ran down Veterans Highway as the fuel spilled.
