Setauket FD-Large barn burns on Old Field Road Estate

At 00:35hrs on Friday October 15, 2010, the Setauket Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 136 Old Field Road in the Village of Old Field. Upon the arrival of the first Chief a working fire was transmitted for a fully involved 150X50 U shaped structure. Under the direction of Chief Brown, the incoming units were ordered to pick up the hydrant and lay into the scene. After a quick size up Chief Brown reported that the burning structure was a large barn with other connected buildings and all animals were out. The fire would prove to be very challenging due to a stiff tropical storm force 30 mph wind blowing directly off the Long Island Sound adjacent to the property. With help from neighboring departments. including Terryville, Port Jefferson, Stony Brook and Centereach, Mt. Sinai, Terryville, Selden and St. James, firefighters were able to protect multiple structures that were in close proximity to the fire building. After a long night of firefighting the sun rose to shed light on the nearly one mile of hose that was used to supply and extinguish the blaze. There were no reported human injuries but unfortunately one horse died the next day. All photos courtesy of Dennis Whittam.
