February 24, 2023 Ex-Chief Richard Keller a 57 year member of Smithtown Fire Department, passed into life eternal today on what would have been his 87th birthday. Chief Keller was a charter member of Engine Company 5 when it was formed in 1966. He worked his way up the company ranks, serving as Captain twice. He then moved into the Chiefs office in 1975 and served as Chief of Department from 1981-1983. A lion for training and firematic skills, he was honored as the Suffolk County Chief of the Year by the Suffolk County Fire Chiefs Council on November 16, 2008. He served as a Commissioner for many years following his term as Chief. Chief Keller served in the FDNY, finishing out his career in Haz-Mat Company 1 in Queens. Rest in Peace Chief.
