May 13, 2023, 0020 hrs. The Hauppauge Fire Department is dispatched to a report of a vehicle fire on the Long Island Expressway. Units arrive to find an involved auto on the eastbound side between Exit 56-57.
The vehicle, preliminary identified as Volkswagen Golf, left the roadway, struck a small sign and a tree which resulted. in the rear end of the vehicle being practically torn off. The lone person present had minor injuries but claimed to police he was not the driver and didn’t know anything about the vehicle.
Firefighters from Engine 3-8-4, Quint 3-8-5 and Engine 3-8-13 extinguished the fire with one hand line and performed a wash-down of the road. Assistant Chief Nicholas Mendola was the IC. Central Islip-Hauppauge Ambulance attended to the injured person
