Central Islip FD-Fire at the State hospital laundry building.

March 11, 1941. Fire was discovered in the laundry building at the Central Islip State Hospital. Firemen kept the blaze confined to the east wing of the two story brick structure. The nearest building housing patients is about 500 yards from the Laundry building. The laundry, in which some inmates work, was closed half an hour before the fire was discovered by a watchman who saw flames shooting from the windows. The fire is said to have started from undetermined origin in the laundry’s sorting room. It burned through the roof in several places. The hospital’s own fire department made the initial attack on the flames and was reinforced later by firefighters from Central Islip, East Islip and Islip Terrace. The fire was extinguished within two hours. The damage to the building and to the laundry stored in it is estimated at several thousand dollars. Most of the plants equipment was undamaged.
