Nissequogue FD-Mansion burns on Cordwood Path

January 24, 1985, 0426 hours. The Nissequogue Fire Department responds to a structure fire at the Schabert Estate located on the corner of Cordwood Path and Moriches Road. This 100 year old estate was designed by Sanford White and at the time of the fire was the home of Mrs. Kyril Schabert, whose late husband was a former Mayor of Nissequogue. Mrs. Schabert was alerted to the fire when smoke detectors that were just installed in the house, activated. As such, she safely evacuated the house. The house was built for the Christianson Family, who started Papillon Publications in 1981.

The damage was extensive and the fire reportedly started within the garage. There was extensive damage to the house and two vehicles fell through the floor of the garage and into the basement. The fire was brought under control within three hours. Mutual aid was provided by the Hauppauge, Centereach, Eatons Neck, Middle Island and Stony Brook Fire Departments. There were no hydrants in Nissequogue at the time of this fire. Thats why Centereach, Eatons Neck and Middle Island responded.
