February 1, 1973 2330 hours. Fire reported at approximately 2330 hours at the Sweetbriar School at 1 Higbie Drive. Fire guts an art storage room and damages the general offices, and the nurses office. Fire originated in a kiln in the art room, which was in operation at the time. Investigators say that either the kiln or something near it exploded when the custodian went to de-energize it. St. James assisted at the scene. School closed and was sold to the Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle in 1978. The original Gospel Tabernacle was on NY Avenue in SmithtownÂ
