Smithtown FD-Fire at the Thoma house

February 13, 1942.
Firefighters had to hide behind trees due to exploding bullets in the house. Fire reported at 1545. Page 5 line 10 of the Record of fires and alarms in Smithtown Branch. Listed as a frame dwelling. Sadly, most of the information is missing from the ledger. In spite of heroic efforts on the part of the Central Islip, Hauppauge, Nesconset and Smithtown Fire Departments, it was inmpossible to save the home of Martin Thoma on Terry Road in Smithtown. The absence of water available for use on the premises seriously retarded the efforts of the firemen. The Smithtown Fire Department had all its apparatus out and the water supply of the department was speedily used up. Mr. Thoma is an experienced brew master and is well known in Smithtown and vicinity active in hunting circles.
