Nissequogue Village hosts first official training session in anticipation of starting a fire department.

February 26, 1973 As a result of an ongoing dispute between the two villages and the St. James Fire District, the Village of Nissequogue began a fire training school at Village Hall on Moriches Road. Al Jardin from Hauppauge and the Fire Academy, taught the class under the auspices of the SC Fire Academy (this was class one of the original 13 week course that many of us took when we joined a fire department in the 70s and 80’s). 34 people showed up according to Mayor James Donahue, who also stated that the village has 65 people who signed up to be members of the fire department when it is formally established. The village already purchased a used truck from the Bellport FD to use for the training. Once the fire department is formed, the village will purchase 2 new rigs and keep the used one.At this point in time, the village is still hoping to come to an agreement with the St. James Fire District but no formal date to continue negotiations has been set as of this date. Mayor David Cook of Head of the Harbor states that his village has not decided to go with Nissequogue or to remain with St. James.
