Smithtown FD-Fatal fire at the Wyandanch Club

February 28, 1939 George Smith, 84, died as a result of burns he received when fire broke out in a room he was occupying in one of the dwellings on the Wyandanch Gun Club property, Jericho Turnpike. His sister Ella B. Smith, 74 made an attempt to extinguish the flames with a bucket of water. The Smithtown Fire Department responded and confined the fire to the victims room.

Note: It is recorded that George Washington, returning from a military mission in Boston dined at the home of Eliphalet Whitman. This home became the Wyandanch Club. Annie Whitman, who was the last of the Commack Whitman’s that include Walt Whitman, lived in Smithtown adjoining the Wyandanch Club. When she died in 1912, her house and her lands were subsequently acquired by the Wyandanch Club.

It is also documented that there is damage to the front door from a British soldier that was attempting to locate silver that Caleb Smith I hid to protect it from them.
