Lake Grove-Mob hit on Hy Place

March 17, 1980 21 Hy Place, Lake Grove. Newsday reports in their March 20, 1982 issue that Anthony Manfredonia, 42 was shot while walking from his car. The victim entered the house of his neighbor, Catherine Peterson, who called police and an ambulance. The victim was transported by Centereach FD to Smithtown General Hospital. The 300 pound victim was hit 4 times. The story states that this victim was placed in the federal witness protection program and given a new identity in the 1970s after he testified against leading organized crime figures, including Carmine Tramunti of the Luchese crime family and Vincent Papa, the alleged mastermind of the French Connection heroin heist from the NYPD. The Newsday article goes on to say that Manfredonia apparently left the witness protection program in 1978, moving from California to Port Jefferson, and then to Lake Grove.

Point of interest:
Some of the the players and relationships in this shooting are also similar to those in a shooting that took place on August 17, 1979 at Lennys Clam Bar in Smithtown.
