Centereach FD-Fire at Macys in the Smithhaven Mall

April 10, 2004 Centereach Fire Department was dispatched to an automatic alarm at the Macys store in the Smithaven Mall. While responding, the Chiefs and Lake Grove Fire Marshal were advised of a confirmed fire in the 3 story building.  Units arrived and found that there had been numerous racks of clothing set on fire on the 2nd floor. The fires had been extinguished by store security and no sprinkler heads activated. The smoke was cleared using the stores HVAC system and all but the affected area were reopened to the public within 30 minutes. The Fire Marshal and Arson squad are investigating the fires and based on evidence believe the fires were set to distract people so they could steal large quantities of merchandise from other areas of the store.  There were no injuries.
