May 1, 1962 Fire destroys one wing of a L shaped ranch style home of Mrs, R. S. Serlen on a two acre plot on Bacon Road. Firefighter Thomas Wheeler (SJFD) is overcome by smoke and transported to Smithtown General Hospital. Erhardt Olsen is the Chief and OIC. 65 firefighters from St. James and Nesconset respond. The alarm is reported at 8PM. Arson is not suspected.
