Commack FD-Explosion at the MSF

May 4, 1984 Three town employees working at the MSF were severely burned when an explosion occurred in the room they entered in the building. The cause of the explosion was a build up of methane. The victims were Frank Detelich age 29, William Maccaro Jr age 22 and Vito Lasurdo ( a member of the Smithtown Fire Department) age 21. All were flown to the Cornell Burn Center in NYC. The gas ignited when a light switch was turned on. The MSF is a Town owned facility where trash and recyclables are dropped dumped, sorted and then transported. The site is one of the old town dumps.
