Setauket FD-Abraham Woodhull home burns

October 22, 1931. This is a photograph of the home of Abraham Woodhull one of the leading members of the Culper Spy Ring that helped deliver important information to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The house was built around1660. The location of the home (as per a historical marker) was located at Dyke Road north of Heritage Lane on the left, when traveling north in East Setauket. Photo is circa 1875-1880

The house fire destroyed by fire on October 22, 1931. The fire was discovered between 10-11PM and is said to have started from a lamp that exploded in one of the bedrooms. At the time of the fire, the house was occupied by Richard, Henry and Edward Woodhull. They are the last surviving of the nine that were born in the house. The house was a loss by the time that the fire department arrived on scene. All firefighters could do was protect the surrounding buildings.

A large barn on this property was destroyed by a fire that was caused by a lightning strike a few years prior to this blaze.
