Smithtown FD-Oil tanker overturns on Darling Ave

May 24, 1978 At approximately 0930 hours, a truck carrying 2,000 gallons of home heating oil overturned on Darling Avenue spilling oil onto Maple Avenue and into the headwaters of the Nissequogue River. The crash occurred while the truck was traveling west on Darling in light rain. The truck was carrying Exxon fuel for Watchdog Oil Heating Service. The driver suffered minor injuries but refused medical attention. Approximately 500 gallons of oil entered Millers Pond and had to be removed by a contractor.
