Hauppauge FD-Subject killed after fleeing crash on Bridge Road

May 25, 2022. 1418 hours. The Hauppauge Fire Department and CIHVAC were dispatched to a report of a car vs tree on Bridge Road. Crews arrive to find an unoccupied Jeep Cherokee. The driver of the vehicle left the scene and was struck and killed by a tractor trailer on Motor Parkway.

Suffolk County Police are investigating the death of a man who fled the scene of a single-car crash on foot and was struck by a truck in Hauppauge this afternoon.  Joseph Suozzo was driving a 2006 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Bridge Road when he veered off the road and struck a tree at 2:18 p.m. Suozzo fled the scene on foot and crossed onto Long Island Motor Parkway, which runs parallel to Bridge Road, and was struck by an 18-wheeler truck approximately 1,000 feet east of Milford Drive at 2:20 p.m.  Suozzo, 60, of Jupiter, Florida, was pronounced dead on the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The driver of the truck, Jose Flores Umanzor, 45, of Central Islip, was not injured.  The truck was inspected on the scene by officers from the Motor Carrier Section. The Jeep Cherokee was impounded for a safety check.  The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452
