Smithtown voters approve 330K bond for firehouse expansion

May 28, 1954 “The firehouse will be constructed on a district owned tract of land just west of the Seaman’s Service Station on the south side of Main Street. It will front on a road which will be cut south from Main Street” This road comes to be known as the present day Elm Avenue. At the time of this project, the fire department is still in the firehouse on Bellmeade Avenue that was built in 1908. The vote was 264 for to 163 against.
