Hauppauge-Fire destroys the Chrone Homestead

May 29, 1902 This was before the fire departments were here.

From the Brooklyn Eagle on May 30th 1902:
The Chrone homestead here was burned to the ground yesterday. Mrs Chrone was weaving carpet in a little outbuilding when suddenly she saw flames issuing from the roof of the dwelling. She was greatly alarmed, as she had a mother and grandmother and five children within the burning house, all unconscious of their danger.
The grandmother, being an invalid in bed was rescued by Mrs. Chrone and gotten out of the burning building and taken to a place of safety with considerable difficulty, for the men were away and no available help near. The house, with about all the contents, was entierly consumed.
The flames also reached an adjoining cottage fifty feet away, yet unoccupied, and it was also burned to the ground.
