May 31, 1953 A fire in the home of Arthur Seaver of Hauppauge Road, near Maple Avenue, Smithtown Branch was controlled by Smithtown and Hauppauge volunteer firemen by the use of a new indirect fog system recently adopted by the Smithtown FD. The fire was reported by Peter Griffin of Hauppauge who saw flames shooting from the roof of the bungalow as he drove along Route 111. He rushed to fire headquarters and gave the alarm. Within minutes, the two departments responded. The fire, which caused considerable damage in a bedroom, was quickly quelled and this week, Fire Chief Ernest Wilcox of the Smithtown Fire Department gave credit to the indirect fog system for the quick work in stamping out the fire. The new system involves the direction of water into the flame filled room which, by a chemical process, is converted into steam which in turn puts out the fire. Story from Smithtown News 6-4-1953.
