Kings Park FD-Kayaker Rescued from Smithtown bay

April 7, 2013 Suffolk County Police officers, along with members of the Kings Park Fire Department, rescued a kayaker who fell into the Smithtown Bay this evening.   A Smithtown man was in a kayak, approximately 300 yards off shore, when the kayak began to take on water at 6:50 p.m. The 23-year-old fell into the water but was able to hold onto the kayak. A witness, who was bird watching from the Kings Park bluff, saw the incident and called 911.   Fourth Precinct Police Officers Terence Corrigan and Martin Lauter responded and located the witness.   A Suffolk County Police helicopter and members of the Kings Park Fire Department also responded to the scene. With assistance from the officers, the helicopter located the victim and hovered overhead so that Kings Park Fire Department personnel Greg Smith, Dan Hagstrom and Andrew Strain, who were operating a rescue boat, could locate the victim. The victim had let go of the kayak and Hagstrom jumped into the water. Hagstrom, Smith and Strain were able to pull the victim into the rescue boat.   The victim was transported to St. Catherine of Sienna Medical Center in Smithtown to be treated for hypothermia.
