Nesconset FD-House fire on Nancy Lane

June 28, 2009. At approximately 2000 hours, the Nesconset Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 17 Nancy Lane. Arriving units encountered a heavy smoke condition in the split level private dwelling and a number of victims on the front lawn.  Firefighters quickly located and extinguished the fire which was in a mid level living room.  Nesconset FD EMS treated two victims with burns and smoke inhalation and another with smoke inhalation, transporting all three to Stony Brook University hospital.  Chief of Department Michael Witchendahl called in the Smithtown Fire Marshals Office to determine the cause of the fire.  Fire Marshals found that an intoxicated adult female passed out on a couch. The subject dropped her cigarette, which ignited the couch.  While the victim was home alone at the time of the fire, at some point her husband, son and son’s girlfriend returned to find her on the burning couch. The husband suffered burns to his hands while removing her from the building.  Damage to the structure was moderate and heavy to the contents The occupants of the house had no insurance as the bank had foreclosed on the building.
