Commack FD-Fire destroys Therm-X Chemical Company

June 23, 1970 Fire reported at approximately 1400 hours. Fire was reported to have started in a lighter fluid canning area of the building as a result of sparks from a machine in this same area. The fire quickly spread to other highly flammable which the company produces, in a series of explosions, which onlookers claim happened around every 30 seconds for most of the afternoon. Ten fire departments were called to the scene throughout the afternoon and night. East Northport sent crews to cover at Commack FD HQ. Halesite FD provided fuel for all of the apparatus at the scene. Dix Hills, Selden, Kings Park, Smithtown, Hauppauge, operated at the scene. Firefighters decided that the best course of action would be to let it burn itself out.
