Smithtown FD-House fire on Stuyvesant Lane

June 26, 2020. 0230 hours Smithtown members were alerted for a reported house fire at 16 Stuyvesant Lane. Upon arrival of the first arriving firefighters a garage fire extending to the second floor was discovered and a working fire was transmitted. Engine 5 was first due and stretched two 1-3/4” hand lines and began attacking the fire. Additional apparatus arrived on scene where searches were conducted and a third line was stretched. All of the occupants safely exited the residence and no injuries were reported. Engines 2,3,4,5,15 Ladder 7, Rescue 9 and Asst Chief Duckham operated under the command of Asst Chief Diecidue. Mutual Aid was provided by Commack FD, Kings Park FD, Hauppague FD, St James FD, and Commack EMS. CI-Haupp Ambulance and Nesconset FD covered our district in case of any additional alarms. Units were released at approximately 6am.
One of the occupants, fifteen year old Hailee Hurtado discovered the fire and alerted her father Jonathan, who was asleep. While Jonathan went to find the source of the smoke, Hailee went down to the lower level of the house to evacuate her grandmother, who requires a cane for mobility. Hailee guided her grandmother to the front door where they met up with Jonathan. The two brought the grandmother up a flight of stairs and out of the house. By the time the exited, the fire had already consumed the garage and was extending up the exterior and into the main living area. Hailee was presented with an award by the Smithtown Fire Department on Monday, July 6th at Smithtown Fire Department Headquarters.
