July 3, 1960 Flash fire believed to have been caused by a short circuit, gutted the sanctuary and part of the sacristy of the church. The ¾ of a million dollar (1960 valuation) church had opened 2 years prior. OIC was Chief Wiliam Beach. Fire starts in the alter boys part of the sacristy and spread quickly through a corridor running through the rear of the church behind the main alter. Smithtown News 7-7-1960.
