Township mutual aid drill in Smithtown

July 14, 1957. On this date in Township Fire History, a Town wide mutual aid drill was held at the Smithtown Aviation Field on Veterans Highway. This was in the Smithtown Fire District in what is now the North County Complex.
This was an arena pump drill and all other town depts participated except Commack.
I have not been able to find anything detailing when the airport first opened but the earliest depiction which has been located of the Smithtown Airport was a 1947 aerial view (courtesy of Jim Daly). It depicted Smithtown as having a single unpaved northwest/southeast runway.
There were no hangars or buildings associated with the airfield, but a single-engine aircraft is visible on the southeast end of the runway..
In its heyday, the “Smithtown Aviation Country Club” as it was known, had two 2,000′ unpaved runways, oriented southeast/northwest & east-southeast/west-southwest.
The airport closed sometime between 1955-57
Two of the hangers are still there as seen in the photo. The other photo shows the airport some time in 1954 and in 1955 and shows lots of cars parked on the runway during the annual Republic Aviation Picnic (photo courtesy of Carl Markmiller). Smithtown News 7-25-1957
