Nesconset FD-Woman drowns on Saggese Circle

July 21, 2013

A 70-year-old woman from upstate Hopewell Junction drowned in a Nesconset backyard pool yesterday afternoon, police said.

Barbara Bruce was found by her daughter in the pool at the home on Saggese Circle. Operators for 911 received a call at 2:20 p.m., police said. Bruce was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

It is unclear how Bruce ended up in the pool or how long she had been in the pool, because no one in the home was in the backyard at the time, police said. It was the second report of a person in distress in a Nesconset backyard pool yesterday.

Nesconset firefighters responded to a call late in the afternoon of a 12-year-old boy who had a seizure in a pool and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in stable condition, fire officials.

Officials at Stony Brook did not return calls requesting updates on the boy’s condition.

The Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad said they are investigating Bruce’s drowning.

Bruce had already been pulled out of the pool by family members when firefighters arrived, said Nesconset Fire Department Assistant Chief James Keane.

Relatives last saw her sunbathing, Keane said. Firefighters used CPR and a defibrillator and administered life support medication intravenously, Keane said.

“She was in cardiac arrest the entire time,” he said. “She was never conscious while she was with us.”
