July 23, 1973 Various fire departments from within the county hold different demonstrations in and around the Smith Haven Mall, including extinguishing actual fires outside the mall. The events conclude on 7/28 with a parade around the mall by over 100 pieces of fire apparatus, live extrication demonstrations, repelling off the building and crushing cars. It was noted in the article in the 7-12-1973 Smithtown News that the 11,000 volunteer firefighters in Suffolk protect 922 square miles and answered 33,000 alarms this year (1973).
The executive director of the SmithHaven Mall at the time of this event was Raymond Aarons. The mall phone number back then was 724-1505.
