Smithtown FD-House fire on Amsterdam Road

August 10, 2010, 1521 hours. The Smithtown Fire Department was dispatched to a telephone alarm reporting a structure fire at 66 Amsterdam Road in the Morewood Section of the district.

First Assistant Chief John Hansen was on scene in less than a minute and advised of a heavy fire condition in a two story wood frame private dwelling.

After confirming that all occupants were out of the house, Chief Hansen ordered the first due engine to stretch a big line onto the driveway to get a quick hit on the fire.

Chief of Department Charles Duffy arrived and assumed command, requesting mutual aid from the Hauppauge, Commack and Kings Park Fire Departments, all of which were put to work on arrival.

The fire was contained to the western half of the building with heavy smoke, water and overhaul damage throughout.

The Smithtown Fire Marshals office was called in to investigate the fire. Due to the extent of damage to the ground level floor over the garage, the Deputy Chief Fire Marshal requested that the town TRT units (Commack, Hauppauge and Smithtown) come in and shore up the lower level of the building to eliminate the potential of a collapse.

Other than to say that the fire started in the garage and is not suspicious at this time, no other determination as to the cause of the fire has been announced.
