Smithtown FD-House fire on Harlequin Drive

August 23, 1972 2 Harlequin Drive. A 17-year-old youth hauled his injured younger brother from their burning home yesterday and then, neighbors said, his mother successfully revived him with mouth to mouth resuscitation. Police said the fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom of the house. Mrs. Dorothy Mudie and her four sons were in the house at the time. Her husband had just taken overnight guests to the airport. The woman and her two youngest sons ran from the house. The oldest son, 17-year-old Blair, ran upstairs, grabbed 11-year-old Neil, who had been overcome with smoke, and pulled him from the house. A neighbor said that Mrs. Mudie, a former nurse, gave the boy mouth to mouth until Smithtown firemen could apply an inhalator.Mrs. Mudie age 45, and Neil were treated for smoke inhalation at St. Johns Hospital and released. There were no other injuries. There was heavy damage to the upper level of this brick and white shingle two story house.

This was the 2nd tragedy to strike this family as a son was killed in an automobile crash several years ago.
