Nesconset-Shooting at Rumba Sky

September 22, 2002.

From Newsday:
Three suspected gang members were arrested Thursday in connection with the shooting of a man in the back outside a nightclub in Nesconset last month, Suffolk police said.

On Sept. 22 about 3:30 a.m., Jose Amilcar Bautista, 28, of Central Islip and Augustine Martinez and Carlos Valle, both 25 and from Brentwood, got involved in a skirmish inside Rumba Sky II on Smithtown Boulevard, Fourth Squad Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky said.

The three men, who police said instigated the altercation, were soon kicked out. Five minutes later, though, they got in their car and drove to the front entrance with the car’s headlights turned off.

“Because they were MS-13 members [a Salvadoran gang], they should have been treated better, they felt,” Pelkofsky said.

One of the men leaned out from the car and fired two shots with a semi-automatic handgun, striking a 22-year-old male patron standing outside, police said. The victim, whom police are not identifying because of the possibility of reprisal, was not involved in the earlier altercation, Pelkofsky said.

The victim’s liver was lacerated and part of the organ was removed, Pelkofsky said. “He was basically willing himself to live,” Pelkofsky said.

All three suspects were arrested near their homes and charged with first-degree gang assault, Pelkofsky said.
